The hijacking of a social media network occurs when someone takes over an account that doesn’t belong to them and locks out the individual that owns it. Most times accounts that are targeted are active accounts that have many active followers because hijackers feel they could make a lot of profit from them. In this way, hijacking has become a major issue for most internet users with valuable data on their accounts.
Multi-factor authentication has been defined as “an authentication method in which a computer user is granted access only after successfully presenting two or more pieces of evidence to an authentication mechanism: knowledge, possession, and inherence.” Two-factor authentication then is a type of multi-factor authentication needing two pieces of evidence.
Apart from making sure that you have an alphanumeric password to protect you from these hackers, the alternative way of keeping your account safe is by turning on two-factor authentication.
In January 2020, Microsoft admitted that about 250 million customer’s service data was compromised in December of the previous year, although they claimed that no malicious activities were carried out on these accounts before the company responded to alienate the incident.
Likewise, at the end of 2019, Facebook reported more than 267 million Facebook users’ data was exposed. This was tracked to some Vietnamese hackers.
Two-factor authentication is a precautionary measure that makes tracing the source of a compromise easy and accounts retrieval faster.
Two-factor authentication
To avoid being a victim, most sites and applications advise two-factor authentication. This is an extra layer of security that makes any attempt at an illegal log in difficult as it involves a process of double verification.
This is how to do two-step verification on Instagram (one of the top social media networks targeted by hackers):
- Go to your profile and tap the button icon with 3 horizontal lines, then go to Settings.
- Tap Security and then scroll down and tap Two-Factor Authentication.
- Next to Authentication App, tap the toggle switch on, then tap Set Up Manually. If you don’t see the toggle switch, tap Get Started.
- Tap Copy Key below the Instagram key and paste it into
your authentication app (example: Duo Mobile or Google Authenticator).
- Note: You should copy the key code to your clipboard, take a screenshot, or save it in some other way since you won’t be able to access the code again once you’ve finished setting up.
- After your Instagram account is linked to your authentication app, copy the 6-digit code your authentication app creates.
- Go back to the Instagram app, tap Next and paste the 6-digit code to complete the process on that device.
After you’ve set up two-factor authentication on the first device, you’ll be able to send the Instagram key to your other devices and set up two-factor authentication from there.
It should, however, be noted that when you use apps that aren’t from the official app store, and when you allow third-party services have suspicious access, you are putting your account in danger even despite the two-factor authentication. This is why a hack may still be successful even with the extra layer of protection.
