“Daddy, there’s a wolf in my bedroom!” The little girl said with so much wonder.
Was a real wolf in the house? Of course not! It’s actually just an AR (Augmented Reality) feature in Google’s search engine.
What is augmented reality?
Augmented reality, often abbreviated as AR, can simply be defined as a combination of the real physical world with computer-generated (virtual) elements. It is called ‘augmented’ because it ‘adds’ digital information or digital elements to real life subjects captured on camera or video.
Take Snapchat for example where you could have your bitmoji dancing on your laptop, or on the edge of your coffee mug.
What is Google AR?
Google AR is a feature of the search engine that few people know about. It shows a 3D image of a search result in the room with you through an AR-enabled device to bring the results to life.
For example, if you were to search for how big an animal is, provided the animal is available as AR, you will be shown the height, mass, length and all those facts, along with the option to ‘meet a life-sized version up close’. If you click on this, a 3D version of the animal appears in the room!
The animals available include; an Alligator, an Angler fish, a Brown bear, a Cat, a Cheetah, a Dog, a Duck, an Eagle, an Emperor penguin, a Giant panda, a Goat, a Hedgehog, a Horse, a Lion, an Octopus, a Shark, a Snake, a Tiger, a Turtle, and a Wolf.
Will you be trying this out? I definitely recommend it! Why not have a virtual wild animal keep you company during this quarantine?
